Regain on your mind? 4 tips for staying on track

Regain WLS weight loss surgery

Worried about regaining the weight you worked so hard to lose? This is a big concern for many of us following weight loss surgery, but I’m here to tell you, IT’S TOTALLY NORMAL! And you’re not alone.

The same goes if you've come off a weight loss injection like Wegovy or Mounjaro and felt the appetite switch flip back on. Post-surgery regain or post-medication regain, the wobble is the same and so is the way through it.

Here are some tips on how to stay, or get back, on track:

  1. Rethink your relationship with food. Rewiring yourself to think of food as fuel, instead of as an emotional comfort, is an essential part of the process. Food is not good or bad is a good place to start on that.
  2. Get moving. Switching up your physical activity can make a big difference. Try something new like swimming, yoga or strength training. Or join a running club like I did! You don’t have to spend hours at the gym.
  3. Sleep. Making sure that you get a good six to eight hours of sleep is very important for the body to rest, heal and provide you with enough energy for the next day.
  4. Go back to your dietitian. That’s what they’re there for, and seeing a professional can help identify the areas where you might be going wrong. You might be surprised you’re not eating enough!

If you are wondering whether a very low calorie diet is the answer, we look at that in what to do about regain. And if the scales are doing your head in, it might be time to ditch them.
